What is an API and why it is key for system integrations
An API is the "language" systems use to talk to each other. We explain simply what it is and why a good API makes integrations easier and cheaper.
An API (Application Programming Interface) is an agreed set of rules by which two separate software systems can exchange data with each other automatically — for example your website and an online payment system, or your ERP system and the accounting program your bookkeeper uses.
Why a good API matters so much
It enables connecting completely separate systems without someone manually retyping data from one into the other — which is both slow and prone to human error while typing or copying.
A well-designed, documented API makes every future integration — a new app, a new business partner, a new sales channel — much faster and cheaper to connect, because the foundation for communication already exists and is only extended.
It opens the possibility for the exact same backend system (the background logic) to serve the website, the mobile app, and any other channel simultaneously, without rewriting the same logic anew for each channel separately.
A practical example from real business
When an ERP system has a well-designed API, connecting with the bank for automatic payment checks, with the accounting program for automatic invoice transfer, or with the webshop for stock synchronisation becomes a matter of relatively quick configuration — not months of extra, expensive development that would otherwise be needed to build the same link from scratch for each individual case.
