What is a PWA and when is it enough instead of a real app
A PWA (progressive web app) works in the browser like an app, without app stores. When that is enough, and when you still need a real mobile app.
A PWA (Progressive Web App) is a web application behaving like a mobile app — it can be installed on the phone's home screen with its own icon, works partially offline, and can send notifications — while being distributed entirely through the regular web, with no need for the App Store or Google Play.
Practically, the user opens your site in the browser, gets an "add to home screen" prompt, and from that moment the icon behaves almost identically to one downloaded from an official app store.
When a PWA is enough
When you need fast distribution without waiting for store approval (which sometimes takes days or weeks, especially with Apple) — a PWA is available the moment you publish it on your site.
When you want one shared codebase for all platforms and devices without separate development for each, and the features you need don't depend too heavily on device-specific capabilities.
When the budget is limited and you need a quick solution to test the idea before a bigger investment in a full mobile app.
When you still need a real mobile app
When deep device integrations are key — advanced camera features, specific sensors, biometric authentication (fingerprint, face recognition) at the highest level the operating system allows.
When fully reliable offline operation is essential, with sophisticated data synchronisation when the connection returns — a PWA supports limited offline work, but not at the level of a full native or React Native app.
When presence in the App Store and Google Play matters in itself — for visibility (people search the stores looking for solutions), for trust (an official store feels more reliable to users), or for marketing reasons tied to ranking within the store itself.
