What is technical SEO and why it is the foundation of everything else

Nikola CerićFounder & CEO, Manage IT

Titles, meta descriptions, sitemap, canonical, schema.org — we explain the basic technical elements without which even the best content doesn't rank.

Content attracts visitors and persuades them to contact you, but technical SEO is what enables Google to understand what your page is about at all, index it correctly, and display it properly in search results. Without this technical foundation, even the best-written text on the site remains practically invisible to Google.

The basic elements of technical SEO

Titles (title tags) and meta descriptions — short texts shown directly in Google search results that clearly say what the page is about and directly affect whether someone clicks your result or a competitor's.

Sitemap.xml — a structured map of all your site's pages that you hand directly to Google, making it easier for it to find and follow every part of your content.

Canonical tags — prevent confusion when the site has several similar or identical URLs (for example the same page reachable with and without "www"), telling Google which is the "main", real version to rank.

Schema.org (structured data) — a standardised format explicitly telling Google exactly what type your content is: a service, an article, a product, a frequently asked question.

Loading speed and mobile display — as explained in an earlier article, this is both a technical and a user factor Google directly measures and takes into account.

Why technical SEO is invisible yet foundational

A visitor to your site will never see the sitemap.xml or a canonical tag — these elements work in the background, exclusively for machines (Google and other search engines), not for the human eye.

That is exactly why they get forgotten or postponed "for later" — there is no visual evidence something is missing. But without this technical foundation, even the best, most carefully written content isn't indexed or ranked properly, because Google simply cannot "read" and classify it correctly.

That is why we set up technical SEO from day one of building a site, embedded in the very structure, not as an afterthought someone adds months later when they notice the site ranks poorly.
