Website or social media — why you need both
Facebook and Instagram are rented space; the website is yours. We explain why not to rely on social networks alone and how the two work together.
"We have an Instagram and Facebook page — do we even need a website?" — a question we hear often, especially from smaller companies that have built a solid following on social networks and don't immediately see why they would invest in something extra.
The answer is: yes, you still need a site, for reasons that have nothing to do with fashion and everything to do with control over your own business.
Social networks are rented space, not yours
Facebook, Instagram and similar platforms are someone else's property with someone else's rules. Your profile, however many followers it has, can be suspended, limited in reach by new algorithm changes, or in an extreme case shut down completely — through no fault of yours, and with no right of appeal guaranteeing a quick resolution.
We have seen companies build thousands of followers over years, then lose access to the account overnight due to an automatic, often wrong, content-moderation decision — and with it lose their only channel to customers.
Why a website remains essential
Ownership: the site is yours — you control the domain, hosting and content, and nobody can restrict it, delete it or change the terms of use overnight.
Google search: when someone searches for your service on Google (not on the Instagram platform itself), social profiles practically don't appear in results the way a serious site does — a good site with technical SEO is what gets found.
The trust of serious buyers: bigger, more serious customers and B2B partners as a rule check a company's website before making contact or signing a contract — a social-media profile doesn't feel like sufficient proof of a serious business.
Full control over the presentation: on your site you choose exactly what every page looks like, which information is highlighted, and what the journey from first impression to contact looks like — on social networks you are limited by the platform's format.
How the site and social networks work together
This is not an "either-or" question — the best result comes from the combination. Social networks are an excellent channel for regular, frequent content that builds presence and brings new people to your brand through algorithmic recommendation and sharing.
The site is where those same people linger, learn the details, and decide to contact you or buy — because the site offers depth, structure and trust that a social post simply cannot provide in a couple of sentences and one picture.
A practical flow that works: an Instagram post attracts attention and generates interest → the link in bio or in the post leads to a specific page on the site (say a product page or contact form) → the visitor on the site gets all the information needed to make a decision.
Conclusion
Social media and the website are not competitors but partners in the same strategy — the networks bring people, the site converts them into inquiries and customers, and keeps your business independent of the rules and whims of a platform you don't control.
